Jane Delaney does things her paying customers can't do, don't want to do, don't want to be seen doing, can't bring themselves to do, and/or don't want it to be known they'd paid someone to do. To dead people. Life gets complicated for Jane and her Death Diva business when she's hired to liberate a gaudy mermaid brooch from the corpse during a wake. Well, a girl's got to make a living, and this assignment pays better than scattering ashes, placing flowers on graves, or bawling her eyes out as a hired mourner. Unfortunately for Jane, someone else is just as eager to get his hands on that brooch, and he's even sneakier than she is. Just when she thinks her biggest problem is grand theft mermaid, things take a murderous turn. But hey, when you've teamed up with a neurotic seven-pound poodle named Sexy Beast, how can you go wrong?

authorinterview
1) Where do you like to write?
A busy broad like me? It’s wherever I can scrounge up a computer, legal pad, store receipt, or cocktail napkin to jot on. Hey, give me a patch of untattooed flesh and a Sharpie, and I’m good to go.

2) What is a day in the life of an author like?
At 10:30 am on the dot, my devoted monkey butler Horace wakes me with breakfast in bed, before drawing my bubble bath. I spend the rest of the day cuddling Murray the Wonder Poodle (the real-life model for Sexy Beast in Undertaking Irene), entertaining visiting dignitaries, sipping champagne and nibbling on bonbons, and, oh yeah, writing.
Okay, seriously? I have a day job (editor in chief of a nonprofit audio magazine for the visually impaired), so I work my writing schedule around that. I make time in the early morning before work and on the weekends.

3) Do you have any interesting writing quirks?
I prefer to curl on a recliner with my laptop. The pretty new desktop computer in the den doesn’t get much of a workout from me.

4) What is your favorite part of the writing process? Your least favorite?
My favorite part is editing my words. My least favorite is getting those words on the page in the first place.

5) What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love to cook, do yoga, and play with Murray the Wonder Poodle. And before you ask, yes, Murray is just as neurotic and high-maintenance as his fictional incarnation, Sexy Beast.

This or That:

Coffee or Tea?
Give me that high-test java, baby! Though I’ve gotta admit, there’s nothing like a tall glass of sweet tea in the summer.

Sweet or Sour?
Give me a wedge of sour lemon in that sweet tea.

Day or Night?
As long as I’m with the people I love (and Murray), I don’t even notice what time it is.

Pen or Pencil?
I’m a throwback: pencil. Easier to erase your booboos and pretend they never happened.

Desktop or Laptop?
I love to take my laptop into the backyard and write under the dogwood tree. I call it my branch office.

Lastly…what are you working on right now?
Book two of the Jane Delaney mystery series, of course! Working title: Uprooting Ernie.

bookreview
Undertaking Irene by Pamela Burford is one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time! This cozy definitely packed the laughs. I was laughing out loud right from the start. This story was so fun and I really enjoyed it! Jane is a great character. The plot and the mystery were just spot-on. I can’t wait for book two. If you like humor with your mystery, definitely check this one out. I bet you’ll be laughing, too. 😀

  1. Thanks so much for hosting me today, Brooke, and for the fabulous review! I’m having a blast writing the Jane Delaney series. Good luck to everyone who enters the giveaway!

    1. I haven’t listened to music in the past while writing, Mary, but I think I’m going to give it a try. It will have to be purely instrumental, though, because hearing words makes it difficult to concentrate on what I’m writing.

Chum, as for yoga, YEAH! When I’m in the yoga studio, I let everything go except what my body and mind are doing. I love it!
